This edging was originally designed to accompany the striped lace baby blanket, but you can adapt it to many other projects as well. Please see the baby blanket pattern for materials list, yarn information, abbreviations and design notes.
Round 1: Work 1 round of sc all the way around your project. When you get to the corners, ch 2 to form the corner space. At the end of the round, join the end to the beginning with a sl st.
If you are using this edging on the striped lace baby blanket, you'll start by working 129 evenly spaced sc down the side of the blanket, ch 2, 129 more sc across the foundation chain, ch 2, 129 sc back up the other side of the blanket, ch 2, and 129 sc across the upper edge. Ch 2, join with a sl st to the beg of the round.
If you're working a different project, the number of sc sts will be different.
Round 2: Ch 3, [Skip 1 sc, (v st in next sc, skip next 2 sc.) Repeat sequence inside ()s until you get to the corner.
To Form the Corner: V st in next ch-2 space, ch 2, v st in same corner space.] Repeat instructions inside []s 2 times more.
Last Side: Repeat from [ to ). Then repeat the sequence inside ()s until you get to the corner. v st in ch-2 space, ch 2. Create another v st by using the 1st 3 ch sts you worked at the beginning of the round -- dc in base of the first ch, then ch 1 and join with a sl st to the 3rd ch st in the round. Sl st in center of next v st.
Round 3: Work 1 v st in every v st, all the way around. To form the first v st, ch 4; the 1st 3 chs count as 1 dc, then work 1 more dc to complete the v st. Work all the other v sts as usual.
When you get to the corners, work 1 v st in ch-2 corner space, then continue working a v st in each v st.
At the end of the round, use a sl st to join work to the 3rd sl st from the beginning of the round.
Round 4: In this round, you will work picot sts into each v st.
Work a sl st into the center of the next v st. Sc in same v st, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, sc in v st. (Sl st in space between 2 v sts, sc in next v st, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, sc in same v st.) Repeat the sequence inside the ()s all the way around. When all the v sts have picots, end off.
Round 5: (Optional) In this round, you're going to create an outline between the body of the baby blanket and the edging. There are a couple of different ways you could accomplish this:
- Surface crochet, using slip stitches, or
- Embroidery on top of the crochet work
I used slip stitches crocheted on the surface to make the sample shown above, but you can do it either way.
Sandi Marshall posted an example of the embroidery chain stitch you could use. Her example shows the stitch being used on a dish towel, but it has many possible uses.
If you'd like to work this part in crochet, work a round of sl st on the surface of the fabric in between the body of the afghan and the edging, at the spot they touch each other.
You'll use a contrasting color; in the sample blanket, I used soft lilac yarn to do this part.
