GRANNY SQUARE:
Crochet 3 ch on hook size 4 mm with Merino Extra Fine and form a ring with 1 sl st in first ch - see Square colours above.
ROUND 1: 3 ch, 2 tr in ch-ring, 3 ch, * 3 tr in ch-ring, 3 ch *, repeat from *-* a total of 3 times and finish with 1 sl st in 3rd ch from beg of round. Turn piece.
ROUND 2: Switch colour and READ CROCHET TIP. 3 ch, 2 tr in first ch-loop, 3 ch, 3 tr in same ch-loop, * 1 ch, 3 tr in next ch-loop, 3 ch, 3 tr in same ch-loop *, repeat from *-* a total of 3 times and finish with 1 ch and 1 sl st in 3rd ch from beg of round. Turn piece.

ASSEMBLY:
Squares are worked tog with off white on hook size 4 mm, see diagram M.1 in which order and see diagram M.2 on explanation on how the squares are worked tog. Work the squares tog on the short side of blanket first, see direction arrow A, repeat diagram M.1 a total of 3 times vertically. Finally work all squares tog on the long side of blanket - see direction arrow B.
CROCHET EDGE:
Work an edge around the entire blanket on hook size 4 mm with off white as follows:
ROUND 1: In every ch-loop work * 3 tr and 1 ch *. Repeat from *-* around the sides, in the corners work 3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr.
ROUND 2: Work * 3 ch, 1 dc in ch-loop from previous round *. Repeat from *-* around the sides, in the corners work 1 dc, 2 ch and 1 dc. Finish with 1 sl st in first ch on round.

Place 2 and 2 squares on top of each other WS against WS, and work them tog as follows (also see diagram X.2): Work 1 dc in ch-loop in the corner on 1st square, 2 ch, 1 dc in ch-loop in the corner on 2nd square, 4 ch, skip 3 tr on 1st square, 1 dc before next tr on 1st square, 2 ch, skip 3 tr on 2nd square, 1 dc before next tr on 2nd square, 4 ch, skip 3 tr on 1st square, 1 dc in next tr on 1st square, 2 ch, skip 3 tr on 2nd square, 1 dc in next tr on 2nd square, 4 ch, skip 3 tr on 1st square, 1 dc before next tr on 1st square, 2 ch, skip 3 tr on 2nd square, 1 dc before next tr on 2nd square, 4 ch, 1 dc in ch-loop on 1st square, 2 ch, 1 dc in ch-loop on 2nd square.
Continue to work squares tog like this. NOTE: Make sure that the transitions between every square are pretty when the squares are worked tog alongside.
CROCHET EDGE:
Beg from RS at the top of left corner (seen when shawl is flat in front of you) and work on hook size 4 mm with rust as follows: 1 dc in first st, * 4 ch, skip approx. 2 cm, 1 dc in next st *, repeat from *-* around the entire shawl and finish with 4 ch and 1 sl st in dc from beg of round.
When 1 round has been worked around the entire shawl, work along the 2 diagonal sides on the shawl as follows: * 4 ch, 1 dc in dc from previous round *, repeat from *-* and finish with 1 dc in the right upper corner on shawl.

One Square = about 8 x 8 in. (20.5 x 20.5 cm).

1. Afghan is made from 20 Squares: 4 each of Squares I and V, and 3 each of Squares II, III, IV and VI. Squares are sewn together following an Assembly Diagram.
2. Squares are worked in joined rnds with RS facing at all times. Do not turn at the beginning of rnds.
3. Each Square is worked using 2 colors. Color is changed at the end of every rnd.
4. To change color in joining sl st at the end of a rnd, work last st of rnd, drop old color and insert hook in first st of rnd. With new color, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook to complete sl st. Proceed with new color. Do not fasten off old color. Keep color not in use on WS of piece until next needed.

AFGHAN
SQUARE I (make 4)
With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; change to B and join with sl st in first sc – 6 sts.
Rnd 2: With B, ch 1, 2 sc in each st around; change to A and join with sl st in first sc – 12 sts at the end of this rnd.
Note: In Rnds 3-16, always skip the st into which the joining sl st was worked, work the first st of each rnd into the next st.
Rnd 3: With A, ch 1, *(sc, hdc, sc) in next sc, sc through back loop of next 2 sc; rep from * 3 more times; with B, join with sl st in first sc – 20 sts.
Rnd 4: With B, ch 1, *(sc, hdc, sc) in next hdc (hdc from previous rnd), sc in next 4 sc; rep from * 3 more times; with A, join with sl st in first sc – 28 sts.

FINISHING
Following Assembly Diagram, sew Squares into 4 strips of 5 Squares each. Sew strips together to make Afghan.
Edging
Rnd 1:
From RS, join C with sc anywhere along outside edge of Afghan, sc in each st around, working (sc, hdc, sc) in each corner; with E, join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off C.
Rnds 2-4: Rep Rnd 1 three times, working 1 rnd each with E, A, and D.
Weave in ends.
