When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
1. Afghan is worked in 4 concentric spirals beg at center. Each spiral is worked in a different color. Do not turn at the end of rnds.
2. Each rnd is worked in 4 colors. The last loop of the previous color is placed on a holder or a removable stitch marker while stitches of the next color are worked.
3. To create the spirals after the first rnd, A sts are worked only into the B sts of the previous rnd, B sts are worked only into the C sts, C sts are worked only into the D sts, and D sts are worked only into the A sts of the previous rnd.
AFGHAN
With A, ch 3; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 3 (always counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, remove loop from hook and place on holder; *draw up a loop of B in ring following last dc made leaving a long yarn tail to weave in later, ch 3, 2 dc in ring, remove loop from hook and place on holder; rep from * with C and then with D – 12 dc at the end of this rnd (3 dc of each color).
Rnd 2: *Return A loop to hook, working across B sts, dc in 2nd ch of B ch-3, (dc, ch 3, dc) in top of same ch-3 (corner made), dc in next 2 dc, remove loop from hook and place on holder; rep from * with B and work into C sts, then rep from * again with C and work into D sts; return D loop to hook, working across A sts, dc in 2nd ch of first A ch-3, (dc, ch 3, dc) in top of same ch-3, dc in each dc to next ch-3 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp, dc in each remaining A dc, remove loop from hook and place on holder.
Rnd 3: *Return A loop to hook, dc in each dc to next ch-sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-sp, dc in each remaining B dc, remove loop from hook and place on holder; rep from * with B and work into C sts, then rep from * again with C and work into D sts; return D loop to hook, dc in each dc to next ch-sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-sp, dc in each remaining A dc, remove loop from hook and place on holder.
Rep Rnd 3 until piece measures about 50 in. (127 cm) at widest point.
Last Rnd: Return A loop to hook, dc in each B dc to next ch-sp, sc in next ch-sp. Fasten off A. Return B loop to hook, dc in each C dc to next ch-sp, sc in next ch-sp. Fasten off B. Return C loop to hook, dc in each D dc to next ch-sp, sc in next ch-sp. Fasten off C. Return D loop to hook, dc in each A dc to next ch-sp, sc in next ch-sp. Fasten off D.
